The 4.33 grade scale
On a 4.33 scale an A+ is worth more than an A, which is what lifts the top of the scale above 4.0. These are the standard values:
| Letter grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 |
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| D- | 0.67 |
| F | 0.00 |
Which percentage earns which letter is set by each school, and sometimes each instructor, so this calculator works from letter grades rather than guessing at percentages.
How to calculate a 4.33 GPA
- Turn each letter grade into its grade points from the table.
- Multiply the points by the course's credits.
- Add those together and divide by your total credits.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Example: an A+ in a 3-credit course, a B in a 3-credit course and an A- in a 1.5-credit lab give (4.33 × 3 + 3.00 × 3 + 3.67 × 1.5) ÷ 7.5 = 3.67.
Questions students ask
Is a 3.7 GPA good on a 4.33 scale?
Yes. 3.7 is an A- average on the 4.33 scale, which most programs treat as strong. Scholarship and graduate cutoffs vary, so check the exact requirement for the program you want.
How do I convert a 4.33 GPA to a 4.0 GPA?
There is no single official conversion. Many US schools and credential services recalculate from your transcript, usually counting an A+ the same as an A (4.0). Multiplying by 4 ÷ 4.33 is only a rough estimate.
Do pass/fail courses count?
Usually not. Courses graded pass/fail, credit/no credit or withdrawn generally carry no grade points and are left out of the GPA. Leave them out of the calculator too.
What credits should I use?
Whatever your transcript lists: often 3 for a semester course, 1.5 or 0.5 at some schools, and 6 for a full-year course. The calculator only needs the credits to be consistent with each other.
